THE LANE BUILDING 291

Dora and Chet Lane purchased 291 Main Street at auction from the
City of Yuma in the early 2000’s. It took about four years of remodeling

and renovations before the first tenants moved in.

Originally built in around the mid-1920’s and served as Studebaker

dealership. Bowling alley, and bunkhouse for Patten’s Soldiers.

“We built a 1600 sq. ft. apartment on the second floor and lived there
for about six years.” Said Dora Lane, owner and former occupant.
“During that time our little Downtown Yuma apartment was featured on
HGTV on a segment called REZONED.“ It is currently rented as an office.
The Lane Building has been brought up to all current codes and has
had retail and office tenants over the years. Today The Lane Building stands
as a shinning example of how historic and unique buildings can be adapted

to serve today’s business needs.

Some of the original history for the Lane Building is it was rumored to
have been built as a car dealership. It has also been known as a bowling alley,
bar, dance all, parking garage, boxing rings, barber shop, tavern and
at one time, the owner turned it into an overnight crash house for solders
who were “unfit” to return to base that night. Since then it has housed

various retail and office tenants over the years.

THE SHOPPE BUILDING 261

The Main Street Shoppes located at 261 Main Street in Historic
Downtown Yuma was a vision executed by Dora Lane. Originally a 7000
square foot furniture store now has been remolded and converted to fit

the needs of new and growing retail businesses on Main Street.

The “Main Street Shoppes” is designed to be small indoor mall
accommodating 10 to 13 different retail businesses. The current and
future tenants take advantage of easy access from both Main Street and
and Maiden Lane, a climate-controlled environment, fully ADA compliant

restrooms, kitchenette area, and display windows on Main Street.

Sizes vary and multiple spaces can be combined to accommodate.
